"What Is Your Top Priority?" (1 Thessalonians 1:1-10, Matthew 22:15-22)

Rev. Dr. Marjorie E. NunesRev. Dr. Marjorie E. Nunes, October 22, 2017
Part of the Sunday series, preached at a Sunday service

In today’s scripture lesson, the Pharisees are not being honest. They have no intent in entrusting Jesus with anything. They are not looking for the answer to a question. They don't want someone to hold their quarter. They are looking for a way to get rid of this trouble making Nazarene named Jesus. The Pharisees were so angry it blinded them. That's when the Pharisees plotted a way to trap him into saying something damaging. They sent their disciples, with a few of Herod's followers mixed in, to ask, "Teacher, we know you have integrity, teach the way of God accurately, are indifferent to popular opinion, and don't pander to your students. So tell us honestly: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"
