"What's In Your Heart?" (James 1:17-27, Mark 7:1-8, Mark 7:14-15, Mark 7:21-23)

Nothing can choke the heart and soul out of walking with God like legalism. Legalism is the strict, literal, or excessive conformity to the law or to a religious or moral code. There is institutionalized legalism that restricts free choice. Often that is just what we do in the church. We get some idea of what the Christian faith should look like: Then we push and shove people into the most grotesque configurations until they fit wonderfully! That is death! It is a wooden legalism which destroys the soul. The Pharisees were legalist! The difference between Jesus' holiness ethic and that of the Pharisees is this: the Pharisees refuse to touch any unclean thing. Jesus aims to make the unclean holy.
