"Stand Firm in the Lord!" (Philippians 3:17-4:1, Luke 13:31-35)

Rev. Dr. Marjorie E. NunesRev. Dr. Marjorie E. Nunes, March 17, 2019
Part of the Lent series, preached at a Lent service

Stand up, stand up for Jesus ye soldiers of the cross; lift high his royal banner, it must not suffer loss: from victory unto victory his army he shall lead, 'til every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed. We live in a world where folks are finding it difficult to “Stand Up for Jesus.” Is Jesus lamenting over us? Is Jesus weeping over our denial of him? Are we ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Are we too politically correct to mention Jesus? Have relegated Jesus to an every now and then Sunday morning?

Philippians 3:17-4:1

17Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. 18(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) 20For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. 4:1 Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. (KJV)

Luke 13:31-35

31The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee. 32And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. 33Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. 34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not! 35Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. (KJV)
