"The Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail" (Hebrews 10:16-25, John 19:1-25)

Rev. Dr. Marjorie E. NunesRev. Dr. Marjorie E. Nunes, April 19, 2019
Part of the Holy Week series, preached at a Good Friday service

On Friday, the fifth day, following betrayal, arrest, imprisonment, desertion, false trials, denial, condemnation, beatings and sentencing, Jesus carried his own cross to "The Place of the Skull," where he was crucified with two other prisoners. On Saturday, Jesus lay dead in a tomb bought by a rich man named Joseph. But Friends I want to take you back to another Scripture, for a brief moment: “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Though He would be crucified and buried, He would rise from the dead and build His church. Jesus is emphasizing the fact that the powers of death could not hold Him in.
Not only would the church be established in spite of the powers of Hades or hell, but the church would thrive in spite of these powers.
