We have the best youth ministry ever! Our energy and excitement for the Lord are at an unbelieveable level. Our kids are involved in Sunday School, Worship, Fellowship, Service Activities, Mission, Tae Kwon Do, Retreats, Fun Trips, Conference Council on Youth Ministry, and the Study of Gods Word. Our youth have become one big family and are warm and welcoming to new members. Check out our monthly calendar of events for more info. Started in 1999 by the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON) is a national network of church-based, volunteer-supported immigration law clinics that provide free legal advice and representation to vulnerable, low-income immigrants.
The New York area site was one of the first JFON sites started in the nation. We currently serve clients in the New York metropolitan area at four church-based clinics:
Long Island: Hicksville United Methodist Church, founded in 2014.
Chinatown, Manhattan: Chinese United Methodist Church, founded in 1999
Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn: John Wesley United Methodist Church, founded in 1999
Flushing, Queens: La Promesa Mission, founded in 2000.
Mission Statement:
Justice for Our Neighbors is a ministry of hospitality that welcomes immigrants by providing free, high-quality immigration legal services, engaging in advocacy for immigrants’ rights, and offering education to communities of faith and the public.
The Hicksville United Methodist Church Food Pantry started in October of 2007. We are open every Friday morning from 9:30am-11:30am. The Pantry serves Hicksville and the surrounding communities. Our clients come and "shop" like they were in a market. The number of people in need here in our area is astounding. Over the years the amount of people seen weekly continue to increase. On average we see 25-35 families each week. Some come every week, others every 2 weeks or once a month depending on their income and expenses.
The Pantry has grants from Long Island Cares and Island Harvest. It is from these grants that we obtain most of our supplies. However, it does not cover all of our needs. We have been very blessed to have a supportive congregation that assists us by donating extra supplies when we run low. Also several other Churches and businesses in the community collect food and donate to us.
The insight of a few people and the willingness of the Pastor made it happen but it is the volunteers that allow it to continue and succeed as it has. Without the wonderful people giving of their time and resources we would close our doors. We can always use volunteers and if you are interested in making a difference in people's lives give the Church a call at 516-931-2626.
Quilters of the Cloth began in November of 2007. Our hope is to help fulfill HUMC’s vision and mission statements of being a joyful Christ-like community: unified in our diversity, mission focused, and supportive in a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment while empowering all people to grow in their relationship with God by providing opportunities for worship, study, fellowship and mission to our neighbors.
To support our vision and mission, our goals include teaching the art of quilting to those who are new to the craft as well as learning from those who are experienced. The skills being shared will enable us to make quilts as gifts of love for those who come to our church looking for support for weddings, baptisms and other life events where comfort is needed or joy is celebrated.
Quilts serve as marvelous vehicles to express joy, love, understanding and support. Each stitch that is put into a quilt carries a message from the heart. It is our desire to show others how much our church cares for our neighbors as well as members through hand-made, heart-felt gifts.
This ministry is open to anyone interested in learning this art beginning at the simplest design to those who are more skilled and want to share their expertise to create more complex works. Please contact Evelyn Biamonte through the church for more information and meeting times.
